This website is all about archery. My class is doing a project called genius hour and for my topic I picked archery. While doing this project I will be teaching you about archery and everything you need to know about it. Well maybe not everything but pretty close. I hope you enjoy this website and lets get started.
Okay I am going to start with the definition. Archery is the sport, practice, or skill of using a bow to propel arrows. The bow is the part the you hold in your hand and use to shoot the arrows. The arrow is pretty simple. An arrow consists of a shaft with an arrowhead attached to the front end and with fletchings and a nock attached to the other end.
Most people that shoot use a release to help them shoot. A release usually sits on your wrist or your hand. It acts like a trigger for a bow. I use a release to protect my fingers when I shoot for awhile.
Some people use arm guards to protect their arm. An arm guard is a form of protection for your arm that you hold the bow with. Like if you shoot right handed you would put the guard on your left hand. Sometimes I use my arm guards, but after awhile of having bruises on my arm it doesn't really bother me anymore.
Dominate Eye
First you have to figure out which eye is your dominate eye. There is a simple test for this. You hold out your thumb and close one eye. If your thumb doesn't "move" then that is the eye you close when shooting. After that is the bow.
Holding the Bow
When holding the bow you take your non-dominate hand and grab the hand grip. Your thumb should go around the back of the grip and your index finger around the front, the other fingers should curl up next to the grip. At this time you should nock your arrow by taking the end with fletchings and a nock and put the nock on the bow string. Your arm that is holding the bow should now come up so it is parallel with the ground and straight out. You need to grab the string with your dominate hand (or with the release on your dominate hand) and pull back. To anchor the bow you should pull back until the point of the string is at the far corner of your mouth. When anchored, the bow string should touch the tip of your nose and end at the corner of your mouth farther from the bow. From here you aim and when you are ready, release. If you are using your fingers you should keep your pointer, middle, and ring finger on the string until you are ready to release. Your pointer should be above the arrow and the other two should be below the arrow. If you are using a release you would clip the release trigger on the loop and pull back and anchor. When you are ready you will just pull the trigger back and this will open the release holding your string back.
Target
After you have shot you need to go get your arrows. If you are shooting with a group you will need to wait for everyone to finish shooting. While the others are shooting you will need to stay behind the line of fire so you don get hit with an arrow. If you are by yourself you can go get them after you are done shooting. It is always best to have as many arrows as possible on the yellow. The rest are good but the yellow is a bullseye. The easiest way to take your arrows out of the target is to put your hand next to the arrow, grab the arrow, and pull it out. If you put your hand next to it then it will act like a bracer. As you are taking your arrows back, cover the end with the arrowheads in your hand and hold near the top with your other hand. After this you are ready to shoot again.
